Gloucester Catholic Names New Ice Hockey Coach Over the years, Gloucester Catholic has fielded one of the most respected ice hockey programs statewide. Now the Rams will have a new coach to lead to continue to carry the torch.
Tom Bunting, who had been an assistant the previous seven years, has been named the new coach, replacing legendary Guy Gaudreau.
In March Gaudreau resigned after 11 seasons and a 101-97-21 record. That mark doesn’t tell the entire story. Gloucester Catholic often played an ambitious schedule and was highly competitive against the best in the state.
The Rams top season was 2009-10 when they advanced to the NJSIAA Non-Public state championship game before losing to perennial power Delbarton.
In addition to his duties with Gloucester Catholic, Bunting, who is a 1992 graduate of Gateway, is currently the head coach of the Philadelphia Little Flyers, based out of Aston, PA. He also coached the Hollydell Hurricanes Youth Club from 2007-2012.
“I’m pretty well connected with our program here and around South Jersey, and I feel very comfortable stepping in as the head coach,” said Bunting, in a statement provided by Gloucester Catholic. “As an assistant coach, I’ve watched everything that Guy was able to accomplish. I’ll emulate some of his coaching techniques but at the same time implement my own coaching style.”
Bunting will inherit an experienced team.
“This is one of the strongest group of seniors we’ve had here in the ice hockey program, and it should be an exciting season,” Bunting said.
Gaudreau is best known as being the father of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau, a former star at Gloucester Catholic. (His brother Matt, also was a standout for the Rams and their sister Katie is a current senior at the school).
Johnny Gaudreau has made the NHL all-star team in each of his three full seasons with the Calgary Flames. This year he had 18 goals and 43 assists and helped lead the Flames to the playoffs for the second time in three years.
Gaudreau, who turns 24 in August, has already had his number retired at Gloucester Catholic.
In his career with the Flames, Gaudreau has totaled 73 goals and 131 assists, giving him 204 career points in 232 regular season games. He also sparkled in his first playoff series, with four goal and five assists in 11 games during the 2014-15 season.
Known as Johnny Hockey, he is the face of the Flames and also of South Jersey hockey. His father also established a great legacy at Gloucester Catholic, one that his successor is intent on carrying on.
