A Look at the Top South Jersey Wrestling Teams
The NJSIAA wrestling state tournament begins on Monday, Feb. 4 with the quarterfinals. The semifinals are Feb. 6 with the South Jersey championships on Feb. 8. The state semifinals and finals are Feb. 10.

Here are how the South Jersey public school groups stack out. These are the teams records at the beginning of the week and their power points, both released by the NJSIAA wrestling committee. The top eight teams will qualify, but a team may move ahead of a team seeded ahead of them based on head-to-head wins.

The seeding meeting came after publication. Below are the teams’ records entering the week and their power point total.

South Jersey Group 1
Paulsboro 14-0, 34.40
Woodstown 8-5, 29.70
Buena 11-5, 29.60
Pennsville, 12-4, 27.7
Haddon Township 12-4, 27.60
Audubon 7-7 25.10
Pitman 12-7, 24.90
Gloucester 7-5 23.20
Overbrook 3-14, 19.50
Lindenwold 3-14, 17.20

Paulsboro is the biggest favorite of any South Jersey team. The Red Raiders are battling to be the No. 1 team in the entire state. Nobody in Group 1 or really in South Jersey would likely beat Paulsboro.

South Jersey Group 2
West Deptford 19-4, 31.10
Oakcrest 8-5, 27.50
Haddonfield 15-3, 27.30
Clayton/Glassboro 12-5, 27.20
Barnegat 12-6, 26.90
Sterling 9-6, 26.40
Collingswood 12-5, 26.20
Pemberton 11-11, 26.00
Haddon Heights 10-5, 26.00
Lower Cape May 4-9, 26.20
Manchester Township 3-11, 19.90
Middle Township 8-2, 18.8
Cedar Creek 3-9, 18.10
Camden 0-14, 14.50

This could be a Colonial Conference dominated Group with West Deptford seeded first. Watch out other Colonial teams Haddonfield and Collingswood. Haddonfield edged Collingswood in a close match last week. Second seeded Oakcrest also bears watching. This could be an extremely balanced Group.

South Jersey Group 3
Lacey Township 14-2, 31.80
Delsea 9-8, 29.80
Gateway-Woodbury 16-4, 28.40
Timber Creek, 9-15, 26.70
Lakewood 13-8, 26.70
Seneca 12-7. 26.30
Absegami 7-10, 25.80
Burlington Township 9-9, 24.50
Ocean City 7-9, 25.30
Pinelands 6-8, 24.90
Jackson Liberty 5-9, 24.70
Deptford 5-10 20.90
Triton 2-15, 18.10
Cumberland 0-14, 14.00

Lacey Township, the top seed, is the favorite, but nobody should ever count out Delsea, which annually competes for a sectional title and this year’s team has the look of a major contender.

South Jersey Group 4
Kingsway 11-7, 33.70
Clearview 17-1, 32.60
Highland 9-7, 30.50
Cherry Hill West 17-3, 30.00
Central Regional 10-10, 27.00
Hammonton 12-6, 26.80
Moorestown 5-10, 26.00
Pennsauken 7-14, 26.00
Toms River East 5-7, 25.90
Toms River South 3-8, 23.50
Shawnee 5-13, 23.50
Millville 4-15, 22.50
Mainland 5-13, 21.20
Winslow Township 3-14, 20.40

Kingsway and Clearview were scheduled to meet Wednesday Jan. 30 in a regular season match. They could also meet again in the sectional final. It would be a surprise if any other team sneaks into the South Jersey Group 4 final.

South Jersey Group 5
Southern Regional 11-4, 38.60
Howell 19-0, 36.10
Toms River North, 13-2, 35.80
Cherokee 14-6, 29.70
Williamstown 15-6, 29.70
Eastern 14-2, 29.60
Rancocas Valley 15-5, 28.70
Washington Township 7-7 26.80
Egg Harbor Township 11-11, 26.60
Cherry Hill East 12-10, 26.60
Trenton Central 6-7 24.80
Lenape 5-12, 24.60
Vineland 7-12, 24.60
Atlantic City 1-13, 15.20

Howell looks like the team to beat. The Rebels have convincing wins over quality South Jersey teams such as Clearview and Cherokee.
