Competition Winners to Perform

The Rowan University Orchestra spotlights winners of the Department of Music’s annual Student Soloists Competition in its concert on Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at 8 pm in Pfleeger Concert Hall.

This year’s winners are oboist Cheryl Tirpak from Edgewater Park, who performs the Oboe Concerto by Ralph Vaughan Williams; marimba player Stefan Griffen of Cape May Court House, performing the Prism Rhapsody by Keiko Abe; and international student and pianist Ana Cristea, playing the Piano Concerto by Edvard Grieg.

Under the direction of Salvatore Scarpa, the orchestra’s program includes Rossini’s “The Thieving Magpie” Overture and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.”

In addition to conducting Rowan’s orchestra, Scarpa is a professor of Conducting, Trombone and Theory. He is also assistant conductor of the Pennsylvania Ballet, and conductor of the Atlantic Brass Band and Bel Canto Lyric Opera Company. His career as a trombonist has been focused on the world of jazz, popular music, and recording. Scarpa was a member of the Bay-Atlantic Symphony and performed extensively in classical venues. He earned degrees from Eastman School of Music and Rowan University.

The event will take place in Pfleeger Concert Hall located in Wilson Hall on the campus of Rowan University. Admission is $10 for the general public and $5 for students and seniors. For directions or additional information, call the box office at (856) 256-4545 or visit www.rowan.edu.
