Football Preview: A Look at South Jersey Group 3

This season South Jersey Group 3 is expected to be among the deepest in South Jersey.

Headlining Group 3 is a familiar name Delsea, which is not only the defending champ, but a team that has won five of the last six Group 3 titles.

Here is a look at this deep Group.

The field: Absegami, Allentown, Burlington Township, Cumberland, Delsea, Deptford, Ewing, Hamilton North, Holmdel, Hopewell Valley, Jackson Liberty, Lacey Township, Lawrence, Manchester Township, Matawan, Monmouth, Oakcrest, Ocean Township, Pemberton, Pinelands, Raritan, Red Bank, Robbinsville, Rumson-Fair Haven, Seneca, Somerville, Timber Creek, Triton, Wall Township, Woodrow Wilson.

Outlook: Delsea remains the favorite but there will be several other contenders. Still, unseating the Crusaders won’t be easy. Delsea is led by senior running back Aidan Borguet rushed for 2,208 yards (9.4 avg.) and 28 TDs. He is headed to Harvard. Senior two-way lineman Colin Poisker (6-3, 290) is an all-conference performer. So is junior linebacker Jay Wright, who recorded 101 tackles and eight tackles for loss. Coach Sal Marchese Jr. who won his 200^th game last season, is among the best in South Jersey history.

Last year the Crusaders beat Woodrow Wilson, 29-28 to win the South Jersey Group 3 championship game. Wilson figures to be a serious contender once again. Senior quarterback Nick Kargman is among the best in South Jersey. Senior Stanley King had 955 receiving yards and 11 TDs. At 6-foot-5, and 190-pounds, he is a matchup nightmare for defenses while also being a shutdown corner and recorded five interceptions. Junior running back-defensive back Muheem McCargo rushed for 1,045 yards and 11 TDs, while also recording 145 tackles.

Coach Preston Brown, a former star at Wilson, has brought the Tigers back to their glory days.

And then there is Timber Creek, a team that had a 25-game win streak snapped by Delsea in a 41-30 defeat to the Crusaders during the South Jersey Group 3 semifinals. The Chargers were hit hard by graduation, especially losing record-setting quarterback Devin Leary, now at North Carolina State.

Still, coach Rob Hinson will have the Chargers highly competitive.

Timber Creek has one of the better wide receiver tandems in junior Tarheep Still and senior Jayvin Little. Still had 24 receptions for 478 yards and three TDs. Little added 36 receptions for 768 yards and seven touchdowns. Senior Clarence Henderson was a first-team all-conference linebacker.

Freshman Donovan Leary, the brother of Devin, is among the contenders at quarterback.

Another team that could emerge as a contender is Burlington Township. Coach Tom Maderia is among the best in South Jersey as is senior defensive back Omar Rogers, who had 82 tackles and four interceptions.

It’s possible that others could surface as challengers, but the aforementioned four teams makes this an awfully strong group even if no other contenders emerge.
