Part I: South Jersey Games of the Week

Here are more top games in as the South Jersey football season continues this week:

St. Joseph (2-0) at St. Augustine (1-1), Friday, 6 pm.
These are the top two teams in South Jersey according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. Top ranked St. Joseph is led by junior running back Jada Byers has rushed for 555 yards and 11 TDs on 38 carries (14.6 avg.). St. Augustine bounced back from a tough 19-7 loss to an excellent State College, PA team to defeat Lenape, 30-6. Led by linebacker Joe Bonczek, the Hermits limited Lenape to just 47 yards of total offense. Bonczek has a team-high 16 tackles in the two games. Last year St. Joseph earned a hard-fought 22-10 win over the Hermits, which was the closest margin of victory during the Wildcats 12-0 season.

Oakcrest (1-0) at Highland (2-0), Friday, 7 pm.

Highland, which was 5-6 a year ago, has been strong defensively in its two wins. After an opening 17-7 win over Kingsway, the Tartans won at Clearview, 14-6. Quarterback Brian Cooey, while running back Johnny Martin rushed for 86 yards. In two games he has rushed for 330 yards (7.7 avg.) and two touchdowns. Leading the defensive effort against Clearview was junior linebacker Oyame Adoga who had two sacks at the end of the game to seal the win over the Pioneers. Oakcrest also showed some strong defense in a 12-0 win over Bridgeton. The Falcons broke a scoreless tie with two fourth quarter touchdowns. Keevon Berry had a 19-yard TD run and Harrison Doe caught a 19-yard scoring pass from Franklin Sayers.  Like Highland, the Falcons appear improved from a 2-8 team.

Delsea (1-0) at West Deptford (1-1), Friday, 7 pm.
These are two teams with serious postseason aspirations. Delsea is the defending SJ Group 3 champ and has won five of the last six Group 3 titles. West Deptford advanced to the SJ Group 2 title last year before losing 21-17 to Haddonfield. Aidan Borguet had a touchdown run, two fumble recoveries and a TD on defense to lead the Delsea to last week’s opening 21-6 win over Willingboro. Last year he rushed for 2,208 yards and 28 TDs. After a tough opening 19-14 loss to Paulsboro, West Deptford bounced back with a 38-0 victory over Collingswood. Ken Lim rushed for two touchdowns, including a 52-yard run. This game features two of the top rushing attacks in South Jersey.

Winslow Twp. (1-1) at Cherokee (0-1), Friday, 7 pm.
Winslow Township continues with a challenging opening season schedule. After opening with a 40-22 loss to South Jersey Group 3 contender Woodrow Wilson, the Eagles beat Moorestown last week, 20-15. That’s a Moorestown team that should be a contender for a South Group 4 playoff spot after going 9-2 last year. Winslow Township has one of South Jersey’s top quarterbacks in senior Prince-dru Bey, whose 10-yard fourth quarter scoring pass to Jacob Mitchell was the game-winner against Moorestown. Donovan Bunch, a Rutgers commit, scored on a 103-yard interception return for Winslow Township. Cherokee, under first-year head coach Brian Glatz, is looking to rebound from last week’s 21-14 loss at defending SJ Group 4 champion Shawnee.

Northern Burlington (1-0) at Willingboro (0-2), Friday, 7 pm.
Willingboro is among the top 0-2 teams in South Jersey. The Chimeras opened with a 20-14 loss to SJ Group 2 contender Cedar Creek. Last week the Chimeras fell, 21-6 to defending SJ Group 3 champ Delsea. Willingboro should be a contender in South Jersey Group 1. Northern Burlington opened with a 7-6 win over Ewing. The Greyhounds successfully defended a two-point conversion pass in the fourth quarter to preserve the win. This game could go a long way toward determining whether Northern Burlco is a contender for a South Group 4 playoff spot.

Millville (0-2) at Williamstown (2-0), Friday, 7 pm.
Defense has led the way for Williamstown, which opened with a 24-7 win over Vineland and then beat Rancocas Valley, 17-6 last week. Senior QB J.C. Collins has completed 18 of 24 passes for 274 yards and a TD. He has also rushed for 108 yards and three touchdowns. Senior Wade Inge has rushed for 159 yards (4.8 avg.) and 1 TD. Junior Brandon Perkins has a team-high 19 tackles. Nobody has had a tougher beginning schedule than Millville. The Thunderbolts opened with a 35-6 loss to North Jersey power St. Peter’s Prep. Last week Millville fell to South Jersey’t top team St. Joseph, 34-6.
