Avion Restaurant at the Flying W Airport

Avion Restaurant in Medford is certainly an extraordinary restaurant, but that`s only part of the story. Located in the historic Flying W Airport complex in Medford, it has a rich history dating back over three decades. My husband Gary and I enjoyed dinner there recently, and it was an evening worth writing about.

Owner Dawn Cave, who opened Avion four years ago, put a lot of effort into redecorating, and the results are magnificent. The atmosphere is upscale yet relaxed, with oak paneling, big picture windows, warm colors and clever touches such as model airplanes and creatively arranged wine displays. The personable staff and our wonderful waitress Lee also made us feel very comfortable.

The menu is like an encyclopedia of gourmet food, with an extensive wine list and page after page of tantalizing offerings for both lunch and dinner as well as many different specials and a children`s menu.

For appetizers, we tried the Cajun Angels ($6.95), spicy jumbo shrimp, and a special - Chef Sovann`s Favorite - which was an exceptional dish consisting of marinated duck, prosciutto, gorgonzola cheese and large, sweet grape tomatoes ($8.95).

Dinner entrees include sides plus soup or a salad, and we both opted for soup. Gary`s Cream of Chicken and my Cream of Eggplant with Roasted Garlic were rich and flavorful.

When Lee brought the entrees, we admired the artistic presentation - they were almost too beautiful to eat! Gary had Fresh Striped Sea Bass ($21.95), served with scallops and peaches in a chili cilantro lime sauce. It was an unusual and delicious mix of flavors, tangy and sweet. My Veal Pompano ($16.95) was a generous portion of tender veal sautéed with mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes and artichoke hearts, topped with luscious provolone cheese.

We really, really didn`t have room for dessert, but Lee insisted we share a small (hah!) portion of White Chocolate Mousse Cake ($4.95). A perfect ending to a perfect meal.

Avion is definitely a standout. They also have a banquet room for parties up to 200. Takeout is available and all major credit cards are accepted. Reservations are recommended.
